We’re continuing to work with the provincial government on updating the Engineering and Geoscience Professions Act, which has not been significantly revised in nearly 40 years. Through our draft recommended changes to the legislation, we will continue to uphold our important work as engineers and geoscientists.

For more than 100 years, APEGA has been the authority on ethical, professional, and technical competency to ensure that Albertans are protected. This is why we’ve moved forward in making more than 160 recommended revisions to the Engineering and Geoscience Professions Act. This updated version of the Act will support ongoing public safety, improve transparency and accountability, as well as provide meaningful consequences for those who fail to meet these standards.

When this updated Act passes, it will help ensure that APEGA remains at the forefront of self-regulation in engineering and geosciences for generations to come. This proposed legislation provides a modernized regulatory governance model and reaching this significant milestone is closer than ever.

Our members have been instrumental in helping us shape these proposed changes to the Act. Since the consultation began in 2014, we have conducted more than five rounds of stakeholder consultation and collected more than 6,000 comments from members and permit holders who have helped shape the recommended changes. We expect to see the revised legislation tabled and voted on in the 2021 sitting of the Alberta Legislature. The time is now to modernize this important legislation.
